Would you be able to sleep with one eye open? Bottlenose dolphins can. When they sleep, only half of their brain goes to sleep. They sleep with one eye open to stay safe. Half of their brain sleeps for about two hours before the other half gets a chance to sleep.

Dolphins are not fish--they are mammals. The smallest dolphin is about 50 kilos heavy, while the largest kind of dolphin weighs up to 10 tons. These mammals have lungs. They have to go to the surface of the water to get fresh air. These energetic animals can be seen near the coast, sometimes swimming alongside boats. Dolphins don't lay eggs. Their young are born alive, and they drink milk from their mothers. Dolphins are smart and brave. Some dolphins save people from shark attacks. They are able to solve many problems and even use tools to catch fish. But their cleverness doesn't end there.

Dolphins can also pass on anything they learn to other dolphins. They show great teamwork. They communicate with each other using sounds like whistles and clicks. Maybe they make sentences just as humans do! Dolphins know the “voices” of other dolphins and even know exactly from whom the sounds are. They can also know themselves in a mirror and check different parts of their bodies in it.

However, dolphins have been facing danger from humans. There are people shooting them with their guns, causing wounds that make them bleed to death. We should protect the smart animal for a better future, not only for theirs, but also for ours.
