Breaking is also called break dancing. It is popular among the youth today. The high-energy, skilful dance includes moves such as Top Rock, Footwork, Go Down, Freeze and so on. The dancers need to think and show the moves of the hands and feet quickly.
Break dance battles are a common way to find out who is the best dancer. In the 1970s in New York City, fighting with others among teenage girls and boys became more and more serious. Some of them began to deal with the problem through dance instead. Just then, the dance style first showed up on the streets. In a "battle" like this, one dancer will show off his kicks and spins, and then the next will continue to compete. Everyone keeps their spirits up. The best dancer will finally be picked out and gain his grand victory. Today, there are battles held in a local hall, where dancers are scored and voted for based on their performance.
The planners added breaking to the Olympics, because it meets the standard of being widely practised by men and women in a large number of countries. "Breaking has been accepted as a sport. I really feel proud," said Xiaoyu, one breakdancer. "And for the Olympics, it will get more attention from young people who may not follow some of the traditional sports."
