The scientific method is used for experiments you do in the classroom. For example, you blow up a balloon to see how its size changes or use a candle to explore how different materials burn. Scientists all over the world use their background knowledge to do experiments, too. It is a way to avoid drawing conclusions that aren’t correct.

There are usually four steps in the scientific method, including observation, hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion. These may not always be completed in the same order, but the first step is usually to ask a question about your observation. You might organise your notes on a desk to make sure that the central idea remains focused.

The second step is to state a possible answer to the question. A good hypothesis includes three things: The explanation for the observations, it is able to be tested, and it will usually predict new outcomes.

The third step is the experiment, a test which will either challenge or support your guess. The hypothesis will then be proved true or false.

The final step is to think about what happened. If the results support the hypothesis, a conclusion can be written and you can share it with the rest of the world, probably by publishing it on a website. This allows anybody interested in the field to learn from your work. Then they could conduct their own research anywhere in the world. So don’t forget to check your grammar to present your findings clearly. If the hypothesis is not supported, you may write a new hypothesis based on the results.
